Project Description
XANTHOS – LYCIA
Known for their independence, according to Herodotus after being outnumbered, they suffered a final defeat to the Persians in the 6thc BC. Collecting their women and children inside the citadel of Xanthos they set fire to it and went out gallantly to meet the enemy. History repeated itself 500 years later when Brutus attacked Xanthos. Again, the Lycians fought to the end and once again burned down the citadel with the women and children inside and went to a final showdown with their enemy. So determined were they in their independence that Lycia was the last region in Asia Minor to be incorporated into the Roman Empire.
